Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshops @ Old Town School of Folk Music

The Old Town School of Folk Music presents an evening of classes taught by slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr. and his son Keoki. There will be a slack key workshop by George at 7pm tonight, and a ukulele workshop by Keoki at 8:30pm. Both worshops will be held in the school's new building at 4545 North Lincoln Avenue. These workshops are held in conjunction with the Wednesday night performance by the artists as part of the school's World Music Wednesdays series. Jane Austen Night @ the Book Cellar

If your Mr. Darcy let you down this Valentine's Day, take some solace in this Book Cellar's Jane Austen-themed evening this Thursday. The evening will feature Karen Doornebos (Definitely Not Mr. Darcy) and Mona Scheuermann (Reading Jane Austen). The Book Cellar, 4736 N. Lincoln Ave., Thursday, February 16 at 7pm.

Catherine Theis and Jessica Savitz @ Women and Children First

Tonight, Chicago authors and Iowa Writers Workshop alumns Theis and Savitz read from their first published collections, The Fraud of Good Sleep and Hunting is Painting, respectively. Taking place at Women and Children First, the reading is free and begins at 7pm.

Valley Girl @ Doc Films

Doc Films, Max Palevsky Cinema in Ida Noyes Hall at The University of Chicago, 1212 E. 59th St., pairs with WHPK to present a series titled "Roxploitation." Tonight's screening is Valley Girl, starring Nicholas Cage, at 9:45pm. Tickets are $5.

Bicycle Dreams @ Viaduct Theatre

Bicycle Dreams, a documentary about Race Across America (RAAM), screens tonight at the Viaduct Theatre, 3111 N. Western Ave., at 7pm. Veteran RAAM racers will do a Q&A after the film, and an afterparty will feature Fat Tire beer. Tickets are $11 in advance, $15 at the door. A portion of the proceeds benefits The Chain Link cycling forum.
