The Illinois Science Council and 137 Films host a screening of The Atom Smashers, a documentary about the science behind the Higgs boson discovery and the hunt for it at Fermilab and CERN, followed by a discussion and Q&A with physicists. The event is tonight at 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Landmark Century Cinema, 2828 N. Clark St. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 cash only at the door.
Cool off at the Book Cellar for this month's installment of Essay Fiesta. In addition to co-hosts Alyson Lyon and Keith Ecker, this month's lineup includes: Overlord of Write Club Ian Belknap; Impress These Apes' Paul Luikart; Solo performer Jen Bosworth; In Our Words' Patrick Gill; and Improviser Mary Lorenz. As always, the show includes a raffle with all proceeds going to the youth literacy organization 826 Chicago. Show starts at 7pm at the Book Cellar (4736 N.
