Open Streets Chicago empties State Street from Lake to Van Buren and Monroe Street from State to the lakefront of cars today from 10am to 3pm, and fills them with foot-friendly activities such as yoga, relay races and a mobile skate park. Free.
The Lakeview East Festival of the Arts runs today and Sunday on Broadway between Belmont and Hawthorne avenues. Enjoy live music and food while exploring the work of more than 130 artists. The festival runs from 10am to 6pm today. $5 suggested donation.

The Red Bull Flugtag amateur flying machine competition returns to North Avenue Beach today. Watch more than two dozen teams attempt to fly -- but mostly fall -- off a massive platform out into Lake Michigan. Event starts at 11am, first flight is at 1pm. Free.
Fork and the Road food tours by bike embarks on The Silk Road, today, a "vegetarian-adaptable" tour of China, Afghanistand and Turkey. The 18-mile tour pushes off from the Kitchen Sink Cafe, 1107 W. Berwyn Ave., at 11am, and ends back there at 4:30pm. Tickets are $55.
The Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance is holding its annual Festival on Prairie Avenue today from noon to 6pm. In addition to lots of family-friendly activities, there will be a commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Dearborn at 2:30pm. $5 suggested donation.
Lincoln Square's German American Fest runs Sept. 7-9 at the intersection of Lincoln and Leland avenues. Enjoy German draft beer, sausage and pretzels, German music and other cultural programming -- including the annual Von Steuben Parade at 2pm today. Admission is free. The festival runs from noon to 11pm tonight.
The third annual Chicago Fringe Festival brings 50 performance groups to Pilsen for shows Aug. 30 through Sept. 9. More than two dozen pieces of experimental theatre are staged today in five venues starting at 1pm; see schedule for more details. Tickets for individual performances are $10, or buy a five- or 10-pack or full festival pass.
The Windy City Wine Festival returns to Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park today and Saturday. Sample more than 345 wines from around the world, enjoy gourmet food and live music. The Chicago Outfit's roller derby travel teams take on Grand Rapids tonight at 7pm at the Windy City Fieldhouse, 2367 W. Logan Blvd. The Outfit's Shade Brigade battle the Confluence Crush, while the Syndicate goes up against Grand Raggidy Roller Girls! Tickets are $15. The once underground Ray's Tap Reading Series crawls above ground for a show called "Lies, Liars and the Myth of Truth" tonight at the Prop Thtr, 3502 N. Elston Ave., at 9pm. The show is hosted and curated by playwright Chris Bower and will feature the work of Vickie Walden, Samantha Irby, Margaret Chapman, Dave Snyder, Matt Test, Barrie Cole, Mason Johnson, Daniel Shapiro and feature the music of Tijuana Hercules. The show is $15 or pay-what-you-can.
