Museum Day

Smithsonian's annual Museum Day is today. Get free admission to more than a dozen Chicago museums (and more in the suburbs) when you register for a ticket.

Sherlock Holmes Symposium @ Newberry Library

The Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St., hosts a symposium on Arthur Conan Dole and Sherlock Holmes today beginning at 9am. Topics will include Conan Doyle's Arctic diaries, Essenay Studio's Sherlock Holmes films and Holmes as museum experience. Free.

Chicago VeganMania

This year's Chicago VeganMania is going to be bigger than ever is going to have over 100 vendors. Enjoy meatless dining and more on Saturday, September 29 from 10 am to 5pm at the Broadway Armory on 5917 North Broadway Street.

Taste of France in Chicago

Taste of France in Chicago is a guided neighborhood tour that also supports Action Against Hunger's mission to end world hunger. Saturday's 10 a.m. tour is of the Chicago French Market in the West Loop. Purchase tickets and learn more about the tour here.

Randolph Street Market

The last Randolph Street Market of the summer is this weekend, Sept. 29-30 at Plumbers Hall, 1340 W. Washington St. Browse antiques from more than 200 dealers inside and outside the hall from 10am to 6pm today. This year there's also a vinyl record swap meet, gourmet food market and "global goods bazaar." Admission is $8 in advance online, $10 at the door ($3/$5 for students).

Oktoberfest Chicago

Oktoberfest continues in the West Lakeview neighborhood at St. Alphonsus Church, 1429 W. Wellington Ave., with German food, music, arts & crafts, and of course, beer. Join the fun to celebrate Deutschland the Chicago way. Festivities begin at 11am, and end at 11pm. $5 admission.

Chicago Slutwalk

Slutwalk Chicago will conduct a demonstration and march today starting at 11am at the Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph St. At 11:15am sex-positive website Get Lusty will lead an electric slide flashmob. The march will leave at noon for the Daley Center, where speakers will include Nico Lang, Tiff Beatty, Clarisse Thorn, Steve Adler, Sandy Gonzalez and the Sex Workers Ourtreach Project. Ravenswood Artwalk

The 11th annual Ravenswood Artwalk, a "tour of arts and industry," runs today and Sunday along Ravenswood Avenue from Irving Park to Lawrence. Explore the many galleries, businesses and art studios in the area, and enjoy live music at Wilson and Ravenswood. The festival runs from 11am to 7pm today, with an "afterparty" running till 10pm. Free.

Schubas' Pig, Swig and Record Dig

Schubas hosts its second annual Pig, Swig and Record Dig, bringing together record collectors, roasted pork enthusiasts and beer drinkers everywhere to 3159 N. Southport Ave. for a midday smorgasbord of music, meat and punker meet-cutes. Show up early for limited edition screen prints, rare 7”, the smell of crackling pig skin, and discounted cans of Goose Island’s finest for $2. Starts at 11am, runs ‘til 4pm. Free admission, all ages.

Chicago Gourmet

The third annual Chicago Gourmet food festival runs today and Sunday in Millennium Park. Sample food from dozens of local restaurants, enjoy wine and attend cooking demonstrations by some of the city and country's top chefs. Single day tickets for Saturday are sold out, but tickets for Sunday and weekend passes are still available. The festival runs from noon to 6pm today.

Hyde Park Jazz Festival

The Hyde Park Jazz Festival runs today and Sunday in venues throughout Hyde Park. Dozens of artists perform for free, starting at 1pm. Shows are free, but donations are accepted and a $125 festival pass gets you priority seating at all events.

Vivian Maier Documentaries @ Thomas Masters Gallery

Thomas Masters Gallery, 245 W. North Ave., hosts a free screening of two documentaries about Vivian Maier today at 2pm. Vivian Maier, Photographer was directed by Tom Palazzolo, written by Jack Helbig and edited by Michael Bullis, with Judith Hoppe as the voice of Vivian Maier; The Vivian Maier Photography Project was directed by Aaron Cahan. The gallery is currently exhibiting photographs from the Jeffrey Goldstein Collection that appear in the book Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows.

Spudnik Press Benefit Auction: In Progress

Spudnik Press is auctioning print, sketches, and other framed pieces of art made by a diverse group of artists to help pay for its recent expansion. Additional auction items will be provided by Star Lounge, Busy Beaver, Eye Works Festival, Bloom Yoga Studio and Museum of Contemporary Art. In Progress is from 6 to 10 pm at 1821 W. Hubbard Street, Suite 302 & 303. Admission is free, and there will be beer, signature cocktails, and food by Antique Taco.

Mid-Autumn Festival @ Chinese-American Museum

The Chinese-American Museum (238 West 23 St) celebrates mid-autumn this evening from 6:30-9pm with food and entertainment. Admission $8-10.

Wanda Sykes @ Chicago Theatre

The Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St., presents comedian Wanda Sykes, tonight at 7pm. Sykes, named one of Entertainment Weekly's "25 Funniest People in America," was a series regular on "The Chris Rock Show" and has also had starring roles on shows including "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine." Twittamentary @ Social Media Week

Chicago Social Media Week closes tonight with a screening of Twittamentary, a crowd-sourced documentary about Twitter that includes several Chicagoans, at 7pm at Heritage Bicycles & General Store, 2959 N. Lincoln Ave. Free, but registration required.

Red Bull Thre3Style World Finals @ Metro

The Red Bull Thre3Style World Finals are tonight at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St. Jazzy Jeff, ?uestlove and Cosmo Baker will perform, along with whoever won the weeklong competition. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. Doors open at 9pm. 21+

Chicago I Love You @ Lilly's

Mission of Burma @ Lincoln Hall

Mission of Burma, one of the handful of mythical bands on the receiving end of the Our Band Could Be Your Life-ification nostalgia treatment, return to Chicago’s Lincoln Hall tonight on the back of their new album, this summer’s excellent Unsound. In the midst of one of the better second acts in rock, the legendary Boston noisemakers will be playing the venerated Lincoln Hall stage to guaranteed ear-splitting effect. Just don’t mistake them for some other dinosaur act’s return to form — for these guys, it never left. Lincoln Hall is located at 2424 N. Lincoln Ave. Music starts at 9pm. Tickets $20, 21+. Shaun's Gay-Bar-Mitzvah

Shaun Sperling, who rose to Internet fame with a video of him voguing at his bar mitzvah in 1992, is now an attorney and AIDS activist. He's throwing a "Gay-Bar-Mitzvah" tonight at Mary's Attic, 5400 N. Clark, 2nd flr., from 10pm to 2am. Join Sperling and DJ Moose for a night of Madonna's greatest hits, culminating with a full reenactment of the famous video at midnight. 21+

Facets Night School: Turkish Exploitation

Tonight Facets Cinematheque kicks off yet another session of Facets Night School, their long-running series of cult film screenings paired with lectures and discussions, with a midnight screening of Seytan, aka "Turkish Exorcist". Tonight's screening will be accompanied by a lecture and Q&A session by Facets Night School regular Lew Ojeda. Facets Night School runs Saturday nights at midnight through October 27.
