The Lakeview East Festival of the Arts takes place today and Sunday on Broadway from Belmont to Hawthorne. View works by more than 175 artists, plus live music, cooking demos, and activities for the kids. The festival runs from 10am to 6pm today.
Riot Fest returns to Humboldt Park for a weekend of punk rock and carnivalling. Blink-182 and the Violent Femmes headline Saturday night. Some two-day and daily tickets are still available. Halal will have a good time at the UIC Forum (725 W. Roosevelt) today beginning at 11am. The Halal Food Festival will feature foods from different cuisines (not just Middle East and Mediterranean!), entertainment, and information on how to get your local favorites to rethink their menus. The Chicago Public Library, Woodson Regional Branch, 9525 S. Halsted, hosts "The Power of Photography," today from 12p-2pm. Moderated by Farrad Ali, this free panel discussion, presented by the Chicago Alliance of African American Photographers (CAAAP), features Chicago mayoral photographer Brooke Collins, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Ovie Carter, Civil Rights photographer Robert Sengstacke and others who will discuss careers in photography, its cultural impact, and its place "as a medium and art form in the present and the future." Crush in Old Town runs today and Sunday on Wells Street from North to Schiller. Sample dozens of wines as well as several local beers, and enjoy live music and food from Old Town restaurants. There's also a grape-stomping competition at 2pm each day. Admission to the event is free, but passes for tastings cost $40 in advance, $45 on-site, and allow you to sample up to 15 beers or wines. The festival is open from noon to 10pm today.
The 4th annual Bacon Takedown invades Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., today from 2 to 4pm. For $15 in advance or at the door, you'll sample bacon recipes from 20 competitors and vote on which is your favorite. Judges will also have their say, and winners will be crowned. But most importantly: Bacon!

San Diego's Rocket From the Crypt is a rock'n'roll band that gained a reputation in the mid-90s for being one of the tightest live bands around. And their frontman, John Reis a.k.a. Speedo, is one of the most charismatic band leaders. (You may have also seen him perform with Night Marchers, Hot Snakes, etc.) They're back in 2013 and as good as ever.
