Join Organizing For Action volunteers and concerned community members at the Chicago Social Security Admin Office (77 W Jackson Blvd #3) for a government shutdown grassroots action event from 1-2pm today.

Adrian Smith Discusses "Supertall Towers & Green Cities"

Architect Adrian Smith will speak tonight on "Supertall Towers & Green Cities" as part of the 2013 Thinking Into the Future: The Robie House Series on Architecture, Design and Ideas. His lecture is at 6pm at the Logan Center for the Arts, 915 E. 60th St. A cocktail reception will be held at 5pm. Smith's work includes world landmarks such as the Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai and Dubai's Burj Khalia. Tickets, which can be purchased online, are $20 for members of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust and AIA Chicago and for University of Chicago alumni, faculty and staff, and $25 for nonmembers.

Reading Under the Influence @ Sheffield's

Monthly reading series RUI: Reading Under the Influence features authors from Curbside Splendor tonight in the back room at Sheffield's, 3258 N. Sheffield Ave., from 7 to 9pm. Readers include Samantha Irby, Chris L. Terry, Bill Hilman and Daniela Olszeska, following the theme of "firsts." $3 cover. 21+

October Drink & Draw Surrealist Games @ Spudnik Press

There are no teachers and no pretensions at this bi-monthly get together devoted to drawing practices and having a good time. This month's design theme is surrealist games. Theme beverage is Oktoberfest beer. Bring your sketchbook, drawing utensils, and friends. Surrealist games an will be provided. Drink & Draw goes from 7 to 9:30pm at The Annex at Spudnik Press, 1821 W. Hubbard St., Suite 303. $5 suggested donation.

Danny Bland @ Quimby's Bookstore

Currently based in Seattle, Danny Bland once played in groups such as the Dwarves and was road manager for bands including the Knitters, among a wealth of other musical entanglements. Decades of hard, loud living have informed his debut novel, In Case We Die, which Bland reads from tonight at 7pm at Quimby's Bookstore. Free.
