The International Kennel Club of Chicago's annual dog show is at McCormick Place, 2301 S. Lake Shore Dr., today and Sunday from 8am to 4pm. Watch the dogs compete, meet the breeders and check out the vendors of various dog supplies. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, free for kids 12 and under. Discounts for two-day passes.

The Guild Literary Complex partners with publisher 7Vientos to support the work of one the greatest contemporary Latin American authors, Mario Bellatin, tonight at 7pm at the Chicago Urban Art Society, 600 W. Cermak Rd. 7Vientos is releasing two works of Bellatin's: Flowers/Flores and Mishima's Illustrated Biography/BiografĂa ilustrada de Mishima. Bellatin will read at the event, and there will also be a performance by Laboratory Dancers and an installation by visual artist Christian Saucedo. It is free and open to the public.
Alejandro Escovedo has cultivated the kind of journeyman career that many singer-songwriters dream about, with help from a steady list of smart collaborations and inspired solo albums. R.E.M.'s Peter Buck solo material mines a similar vein of lost Americana, and his trademark pop chime remains intact on his new album I Am Back To Blow Your Mind Once Again out via Mississippi Records.
