Bacon Month kicks off with a cocktail party co-hosted by the official hotel of Baconfest: Acme Hotel (15 East Ohio). The pork themed soiree will feature three of Chicago's best mixologists including Benjamin Schiller, Danny Shapiro and Annemarie Sagoi all making bacon inspired cocktails. The party is 21+ and begins at 7pm; tickets are $30 can be found on the Baconfest website.
The Gene Siskel Film Center presents a screening of the surreal 1969 film Mr. Freedom as part of its American New Wave series. The film screens at 6:00pm; see the Film Center Website for full details and advance tickets. Film Center: 164 N. State. Box office: (312) 846-2085.
The 2nd Story returns to City Winery, 1200 W. Randolph St., with the theme "No Fool: Stories of Risk and Strategy," featuring stories by Alyssa Sorresso, Earliana McLaurin and Kareem Khubchandani. Tickets are $18. Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 8pm. 21+
Half Acre Cycling hosts the Gapers Block Crits March 31-April 3 in Calumet Park, 9801 S. Avenue G. The races begin at 6pm. Registration is now closed, but there are 10 slots held for walkups; arrive by 5:30pm to get on the wait list. Or just come down to watch!
The Reader's Mick Dumke and Ben Joravsky launch their new monthly political talk series, First Tuesdays with Mick & Ben at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave., tonight at 6:30pm. Guests include aldermen Scott Waguespack, Proco Joe Moreno and former alderman Richard Mell. $5 at the door. 21+
Tuesday Funk is back in the upstairs lounge at Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark St., tonight, with readings by Letitia Moffitt, Brooke Wonders, Cesar Torres, Amy Sumpter and Jill Howe. Eden Robins and Andrew Huff cohost. Doors open at 7pm, show starts promptly at 7:30pm. As always, admission is free, but you must be 21 or older.
The 17th annual Chicago Improv Festival runs March 31 to April 6 at locations around the city. Tonight's shows include Deep Schwa and Trainwreck performing at Second City etc., 1616 N.
