The 25th annual African Festival of the Arts runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 from 10am to 10pm in Washington Park, 51st and Cottage Grove. Enjoy live music on two stages, browse artisans and food stalls, and visit the pavilions. Tickets are $10 in advance, $20 at the gate daily or $30 for a weekend pass. Family discounts available.
The 36th annual Jazz Fest runs Aug. 28-31 in Millennium Park. Today's programming runs from noon to 9:30pm on three stages, culminating with Terence Blanchard with Ravi Coltrane & Lionel in the Pritzker Pavilion at 8:30pm. Free.
The North Coast Music Festival runs Aug. 29-31 in Union Park at Lake Street and Ashland Avenue. Today's lineup includes headliners Bassnectar, Alesso and Prob Cause, plus a dozen other acts. The festival is open from 2 to 10pm today. Tickets are $69; three-day passes are sold out.
Taste of Polonia runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in Jefferson Park. The Copernicus Center, 5216 W Lawrence Ave., is home base, with four stages featuring more than three dozen live musical acts, Polish food and beer, vendors of all sorts and a kids activity area. The festival is open from 5 to 10:30pm tonight. Tickets are $7; kids under 12 are free.
The Bad Examples play Mayne Stage, 1330 W. Morse Ave., tonight with Ellis Clarke & the Big Parade. Tickets are $15. Doors open at 7, show's at 8pm. $18+
The fifth annual Chicago Fringe Festival continues through Monday with 13 shows tonight at 7, 8:30 and 10pm and 24 shows tomorrow at 2:30, 4, 5:30, 7, 8:30 and 10pm. The nine-day festival runs through September 7 at five venues in Jefferson Park. Entrance to the Fringe Festival, called Chicago's "Best Performing Arts Festival," by the Chicago Reader, is a one-time button purchase of $5. After that, individual performances are $10 each. The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 at several venues in Jefferson Park. More than a dozen works of experimental theatre are staged each night. Tickets are $10 per performance, plus $5 for a festival button; Multi-show packs are available for $45 to $175. Performances start at 7pm tonight.
The 6th annual Noir City Film Festival runs Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. Tonight's screenings include Too Late for Tears at 7pm and Roadblock at 9pm. Tickets are $12 per film, or $75 for a festival pass.
The Cooke Book: The Music of Sam Cooke, starring Darrian Ford, does a two-night stand at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., tonight and Saturday. Tickets to tonight's 8pm show are $25 for a seat, $20 to stand. 21+
