African Festival of the Arts

The 25th annual African Festival of the Arts runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 from 10am to 10pm in Washington Park, 51st and Cottage Grove. Enjoy live music on two stages, browse artisans and food stalls, and visit the pavilions. Tickets are $10 in advance, $20 at the gate daily or $30 for a weekend pass. Family discounts available.

Randolph Street Market

The Randolph Street Market returns to the Plumbers Union Hall, 1350 W. Washington St., today and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Browse antiques, collectibles, clothing, jewelry, art and vinyl records from dozens of vendors indoors and in the parking lot. Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door.

All Our Tragic @ The Den Theatre

Got 12 hours to spare and a hankering for Sophocles? All Our Tragic is an epic, 12-hour cycle of all 32 surviving Greek tragedies performed by The Hypocrites. 11am-11pm at the Den Theater, 1329 N Milwaukee. $90 (includes snacks). Read our review.

Chicago Jazz Festival

The 36th annual Jazz Fest runs Aug. 28-31 in Millennium Park. Today's programming runs from 11:30am to 9:30pm, culminating with PRISM, featuring Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn and Eric Harland, at 8:30pm. Free.

Remix Chicago @ Logan Square

Remix Chicago kicks off today with big plans to celebrate recycled art and crafts and inspire the community to "Remix, Rethink, and Recycle." This two-day event will benefit local school art programs and feature 12 eco-friendly workshops (not to mention live music and food and drinks). Remix Chicago takes place on Milwaukee Avenue between Fullerton and California, from noon to 10pm. $5 suggested donation.

Taste of Polonia

Taste of Polonia runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in Jefferson Park. The Copernicus Center, 5216 W Lawrence Ave., is home base, with four stages featuring more than three dozen live musical acts, Polish food and beer, vendors of all sorts and a kids activity area. The festival is open from noon to 10:30pm today. Tickets are $7; kids under 12 are free.

North Coast Music Festival

The North Coast Music Festival runs Aug. 29-31 in Union Park at Lake Street and Ashland Avenue. Today's lineup includes such acts as Talib Kweli, Future Islands, STS9, Nicky Romero, The Nth Power and Kid Cudi. The festival is open from noon to 10pm today. Tickets are $69; three-day passes are sold out.

Noir City Film Festival @ Music Box

The 6th annual Noir City Film Festival runs Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. Tonight's screenings include Death of a Cyclist at 2 and 9:30pm, Born to Be Bad at 4:30pm and Ossessione at 7pm. Tickets are $12 per film, or $75 for a festival pass.

Chicago Fringe Festival

The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 at several venues in Jefferson Park. More than a dozen works of experimental theatre are staged each night. Tickets are $10 per performance, plus $5 for a festival button; Multi-show packs are available for $45 to $175. Performances start at 2:30pm today.

Heritage BBQ @ Goose Island Barrel Warehouse

Starting at 4 pm today, five chefs competing for the title of Chicago's "BBQ King or Queen" will create six dishes with 200-pounds of pig in an effort to promote the consumption of heritage breed pigs raised by local family farms. This year's competitors include Chrissy Camba of Laughing Bird, Carlos Gaytan of Mexique, Abraham Conlon of Fat Rice, Cary Taylor of Big Star and Nathan Sears of The Radler and D.A.S. The BBQ will take place at Goose Island's barrel warehouse (605 N. Sacramento Blvd.) Tickets start at $125 for general admission and $200 for and VIP tickets, which includes 60-minute early access to all food. Both tickets include all-inclusive of food and beverage.

Recombinant Stare Opening @ Spudnik Press

Recombinant Stare, a retrospective of the influential Stare Magazine, opens in the Annex at Spudnik Press, 1821 W. Hubbard St., tonight from 6 to 9pm. Read John Wawrzaszek's preview in Book Club.

Kermit Ruffins @ FitzGerald's

New Orleans' Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers return tonight to FitzGerald's, 6615 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Berwyn. Tickets are $25. Doors open at 7pm, show's at 9pm; get there early to sample some of Ruffins' barbecue.

The Cooke Book @ Lincoln Hall

The Cooke Book: The Music of Sam Cooke, starring Darrian Ford, does a two-night stand at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Ave., Friday and tonight. Tickets to tonight's 8pm show are $25 for a seat, $20 to stand. 21+

J. Davis Trio @ Metro

The J. Davis Trio blends hip hop and jazz, along with many other influences and genres that go way beyond the usual mix. Catch them at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., tonight with >>radiant devices<< opening. Tickets are $10, doors open at 8pm. 18+
