Noir City Film Festival @ Music Box

The 6th annual Noir City Film Festival runs Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. Tonight's screenings include M at 5 and 9pm and The Black Vampire at 7pm. Tickets are $12 per film, or $75 for a festival pass.

Strictly Ballroom @ Millennium Park

Strictly Ballroom screens at the Pritzker Pavilion, 201 E. Randolph St., tonight at 6:30pm as part of the Millennium Park Summer Film Series. Free.

Chicago Fringe Festival

The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 at several venues in Jefferson Park. More than a dozen works of experimental theatre are staged each night. Tickets are $10 per performance, plus $5 for a festival button; Multi-show packs are available for $45 to $175. Performances start at 7pm tonight.

Story Club @ Holiday Club

Story Club North Side returns to the Holiday Club, 4000 N. Sheridan Rd., tonight for "Back to School Night." The lineup features Wyl Villacres, Naomi Huffman and Willy Nast, plus some open mic slots if you've got a story to tell. Dana Norris hosts. Doors open at 7:30, show's at 8pm. $10 donation requested. 21+

X plays Under the Big Black Sun @ City Winery

Seminal punk rock band X performs the album Under the Big Black Sun in its entirety at City Winery (1200 W. Randolph.) Doors open at 6, show starts at 8. Tickets are $35-$45 and can be purchased online or by calling 312-733-WINE (9463).

Owen Pallett & Foxes in Fiction @ Metro

Owen Pallett, who used to perform as Final Fantasy, know his way around a violin. Whether he's collaborating with countless artists, scoring films like Spike Jonze's Her, or going solo with his latest album In Conflict, Pallett is consistently amazing. He has the unbelievable talent of being able to pull every bit out emotion out of the instrument. Pallett will be performing at Metro, 3730 N Clark St, along with the wonderfully experimental and ambient Foxes in Fiction. Doors open at 8pm for this 18+ show. Tickets are $17.

Bishop Allen @ Schubas

Bishop Allen have a new album out, and they're playing Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave., tonight with Jesse Marchant opening. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 9pm. 21+

Dmitry Samarov Book Release @ Whistler

Dmitry Samarov celebrates the release of Where To?, the followup to his taxi-driving memoir Hack, tonight at 9pm at the Whistler, 2421 N. Milwaukee Ave. Samarov will read from Where To? with live accompaniment by Bill MacKay on guitar and Matt Lux on bass. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. No cover, 21+
