Chicago Marathon

The Chicago Marathon starts today at 7:20am in Grant Park, and ties up traffic all over town until at least 11am. The 27th Mile Post-Race Party/runner reunite area in Butler Field in Grant Park will open to spectators at 9am; guests must pass through security at gates 1 and 3 (Jackson Drive and Michigan Avenue, Congress Parkway and Michigan Avenue).

Andersonville Arts & Design Weekend

Andersonville's 12th annual Arts & Design Weekend runs Oct. 10-12 throughout the neighborhood. Beginning at 11am today, find art exhibitions, demos and performances in stores, restaurants and other spaces, all free. See the full schedule for details.

Th Phantom of the Opera @ Portage Theater

The Silent Film Society of Chicago screens The Phantom of the Opera -- the 1925 edition -- today at 3pm at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., as part of its Silent Horror Film Festival Oct. 12-14. Tickets are $10, or get a three-day pass for $24. Doors open at 2pm.

Eat to the Beat @ Nico Osteria

Join Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis of WBEZ's Sound Opinions for an evening that intersects music and food at Nico Osteria (1015 N. Rush St). Chefs Paul Kahan and Matthias Merges will serve a multi-course meal (with alcohol pairings) inspired by the Velvet Underground's debut 1967 work The Velvet Underground & Nico, and even better/weirder, founding VU member John Cale will be in attendance. Tickets $250 for the dinner, which runs 6:30-10pm; for an extra $50, you'll get a VIP cocktail hour (5pm) with your hosts and chefs.

That's All She Wrote 2 Year Anniversary @ Great Lakes Tattoo

That's All She Wrote celebrates two years at Great Lakes Tattoo, 1148 W. Grand Ave. Pleasant House Bakery will be on hand with a food truck full of savory meat pies, BYOB. This month's spectacular anniversary lineup includes: host of You're Being Ridiculous Jeremy Owens; storyteller extraordinaire Erin Diamond; one-woman show Jen Bosworth; and live lit legend Tom Wolferman. Hosted as always by JH Palmer and Angela Benander. Doors open at 7:30, stories begin at 8pm; this is a free event.
