American Homebrewers Association Rally @ Lagunitas

The American Homebrewers Association is throwing a Rally at Lagunitas Brewing Company in Chicago to celebrate the joys of homebrewing and connect beer enthusiasts in the area.The Rally will feature a VIP tour of the brewery, beer samples, gifts, prizes and more. Lagunitas Chicago TapRoom at 1843 S. Washtenaw Ave. 1-4pm. Information and tickets available online.

Álvaro Enrigue @ Crowe Hall

As part of the inaugural Lit & Luz festival, award-winning author Álvaro Enrigue will be reading from his latest short story collection, Hypothermia. After the reading there will be a discussion with Director of the Center of Writing Arts at Northwestern, Reginald Gibbons. The event is free and goes from 12:00 pm to 2:30 at Crowe Hall (1860 Campus Drive).

WBEZ Chef Battle @ Kendall College

Kendall College (900 North Branch) will be the ring that a nice list of local chefs (among them Beverly Kim and Johnny Clark of Parachute and Old Town Social's Jared Van Camp) climb into to compete at tonight's WBEZ Chef Battle. Each competitor will make a dish containing Virtue Cider; you will sample and vote for the winner. Journalists Monica Eng and Louisa Chu will be recording a live podcast of their show Chewing the Fat beforehand. Tickets $20; even begins 7pm.

Palabra Pura: Want @ La Bruquena

The Guild Literary Complex presents Palabra Pura: Want, curated by Cyn Vargas, tonight from 7:30 to 9:30pm upstairs at La Bruquena restaurant, 2726 W. Division St. Featured readers include Bobby Biedrzycki, Adriana Galvan and Kevin Kane. Free, but donations accepted.

Baudelaire in a Box @ Charnel House

Theater Oobleck presents the latest in their ongoing series Baudelaire in a Box, "Episode 7: King of Rain." Part of an ongoing attempt to translate the French poet's works, the show features performances and music accompanying the translations. The performance runs through October 18 at Charnel House, 3241 W. Fullerton Ave.; full details and advance tickets at the Theater Oobleck site.

First Time: First Fight @ Martyrs'

CHIRP Radio presents the latest in its First Time reading series, First Fight, tonight at Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave., at 8pm. Hosted by CHIRP DJ Jenn Sodini, the lineup this time includes rapper ShowYouSuck, writer Ian Belknap, film critic Nathan Rabin, comedian Martin Morrow, storyteller Katie Prout, storyteller Erin Diamond, and CHIRP DJ
Jessi D. As always, the First Time Band will perform covers of songs related to each reader's story. Tickets are $10. 21+
