Chop Shop & 1st Ward Events (2033 W. North Avenue) hosts today's Donut Fest, at which a dozen of the city's finest donut places will submit their best cruller, long john or ring to compete for the title of "Best Donut in Chicago." Event will be held in two sessions; pick an 8am or 11am start time (or hell, do both). Tickets $30.
Stave off the pain of winter with glorious soup today at the Chicago Soup Takedown, which will ladle off at Lincoln Hall (2424 N. Lincoln Ave.) today from 2 to 4pm. You can compete as a chef (prizes & glory await you), or participate as a sampler; tickets are $20.
James Kennedy's 90 Second Newberry Film Festival, featuring kid-made films about Newberry Award-winning books, is back in town this Sunday at Adventure Stage Chicago at the Vittum Theatre, 1012 N Noble St., at 3pm. Tickets are free, but get one anyway because it'll be a packed house.
Today at 3pm on the second floor of Block Thirty Seven, maze maker Matthew Haussler will unveil a record-breaking 73.5-foot-long maze illustrating scenes from around Chicago. Leave your pencil at home. Free.
Lifeline Theatre's 18th annual Fillet of Solo Festival of solo performances and storytelling runs Jan. 9-25. Performances are held at the Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood Ave., and the Heartland Studio Theatre, 7016 N. Glenwood Ave. Tickets are $10 per show or $50 for a festival pass, and are available online or at the Lifeline box office.

Willis Earl Beal presents the premiere of Memphis, a film he wrote, directed and stars in, today at 4pm at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. Beal will do a Q&A and perform music from the film after the screening. Tickets are $7.

Wabansia Ave., and The Third Coast International Audio Festival present Podcast Therapy, an evening where podcast fans can come to learn about new podcasts, get recommendations, and in general get their podcast problems solved by Third Coast's trained Podcast Therapists™.
