The violinist In Mo Yang and pianist Renana Gutman will be performing today at 12:15pm as a part of the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series. The performance will be held in the Preston Bradley Hall of the Chicago Cultural Center, located at 78 E. Washington. Admission is free.
The Moth story slam series holds its Chicago GrandSLAM Championship tonight at the Park West, 322 W. Armitage Ave. Come hear the best storytellers from the past several months, and vote on who told it best. Doors open at 6pm, show's at 8pm. Tickets are $25.
New voices telling new stories. Join Story Lab for an intimate evening of storytelling in the cozy back room of one of Chicago's best pubs. Each month, an entirely different lineup of up-and-coming storytellers will share their freshest pieces. The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents a screening of the 1939 animated film Gulliver's Travels tonight at 7pm in the Auditorium at Northeastern Illinois University, Building E, 3701 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Admission is $5 ($2 for NEIU students).
The Guild Literary Complex's bilingual reading series Palabra Pura returns to La Bruquena Restaurant, 2726 W Division St., tonight at 7:30pm. Latinidad -- Who Are We? features authors Diego Báez and Amy Sayre Baptista discussing poetry and identity, and is curated by Ruben Quesada. $5 suggested donation.
CHIRP Radio presents The First Time, a live lit series themed along life's firsts, tonight at Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave. This time it's First Trip, and readers include Len Kasper, Patrick Masterson, Sam Bailey, Maya Schenwar, Julia Weiss, Peter Kim and Danny Black. Each reading will be followed by related song covered by the First Time Trio. Jenn Sodini hosts. Show starts at 8pm, and admission is $10. 21+
Jimbo Mathus, former frontman of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, has developed a pretty solid solo career performing country rock. He's at the Subterranean, 2011 W. North Ave., tonight with his band the Tri-State Coalition, and the Siderunners open. Doors are at 8pm, show's at 8:30. Tickets are $10 and it's a 21+ show.
