The 37th annual Chicago Jazz Festival runs Sept. 3-6 in Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph St., and Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. The festival begins at 11:30am today; see the schedule for details. Free.
The Music Box screens the 1966 British film Georgy Girl, with Lynn Redgrave in swinging London! The film will be the Saturday and Sunday matinee film, screening at 11:30. Music Box: 3733 N. Southport. (773) 871-6604.
Around the Coyote returns to Wicker Park/Bucktown this weekend, Sept. 4-6, at the Flat Iron Arts Building, 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave. Festival hours are 6-10pm Friday and noon to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. There is a $5 cover charge at the door. Proceeds support the work of the Flat Iron Artists Association. More info available on Facebook.
The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Sept. 3-13 in five venues throughout the Jefferson Park neighborhood. Pick up a festival button (required for all shows) for $5 online or at Fischman's Liquors, 4780 N. Milwaukee Ave., then take your pick of the many performances of experimental theater, performance art, sketch comedy, dance and more -- see the schedule for daily details. Tickets to performances are $10, with multi-show tickets available. Shows start at 1pm today.
The North Coast Music Festival rolls into Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., Sept 4-6. Tonight's headliners include Chromeo, Porter Robinson, Steve Aoki and D'Angelo. Doors open today at 1pm. Three-day passes are sold out, but tickets for today are $79 or $109 for VIP. All ages.
WingFest does its first summer hot wing festival today from 1 to 7pm outdoors at the Plumbers' Union Hall, 1340 W. Washington St. Get all you can eat from 40 restaurants and vote for your favorite wings. Tickets are $40, or $100 for VIP, which includes five drink tickets, one parking pass, swag bag, and access to the VIP area.
Vertical Gallery will be presenting a group exhibition entitled, "A Short and Pleasurable Journey" tonight from 6-10pm. Vertical Gallery is located at 1016 N. Western Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.
The comedy festival's third of three nights features 25 acts at the iO Theatre, 1501 N. Kingsbury St., including Tim Baltz, TJ Jagodowski, Amazing: A Clickhole Show, and The Neo-Futurists. First show is at 7pm; see the schedule for full details. Tickets are $25.
The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., presents the premiere of director Alex Ross Perry's latest film, Queen of Earth, tonight at 7 and 9:30pm. Perry will be present for the screenings; filmmaker Joe Swanberg will moderate the Q&A after the 7pm show, and GB film critic Steve Prokopy will moderate at Q&A after the 9:30pm showing. Tickets are $10.
Porn Minus Porn by the Under the Gun Ensemble presents live staged readings of actual dialogue from real porn movies, but none of the sex acts. See it at 10:30pm every Saturday in September at Under the Gun Theater, 956 W. Newport Ave. Tickets are $12.
