Sox Loss Has a Familiar Ring

So let’s see… John Danks gets shelled, the Minnesota Twins pound the White Sox and Ozzie Guillen gets into a war of words with… somebody.

Yup, things are back to normal at The Cell.

Ok, it’s a little to early to jump ship on the Sox’ 2008 season, just as it was a little to early to start printing ALCS tickets after their five-game winning streak. But there was something depressingly familiar about the events of the last couple of days at U.S. Cellular Field.

First Danks, who pitched a gem against the Cleveland Indians on April, looked like John Danks, circa 2007 as he coughed up seven hits and seven earned runs in the 12-5 loss to the Twins Wednesday night. He lasted only 2 1/3 innings and after the game, called it “one of those days.” To say the least, John.

Secondly, the loss came at the hands of the Twins, arguably the Sox’ biggest pain in the … neck in the ALCS for several years now. And finally, the game featured the continuation of Guillen’s latest feud, this time with umpire Phil Cuzzi, who ejected him in the home opener for arguing balls and strikes. Never a good idea to get into a feud with an umpire. It has a tendency to come back and haunt you, a fact not lost on Guillen.

“Put it this way,” Guillen explained. “As soon as I know he’s going to be behind the plate, I know I’m going to get ejected.”

No, it’s reasonable to draw any conclusions from the events of the past few days concerning the White Sox. But, it does have a familiar ring.

Jose Contreras is scheduled to pitch tonight’s game, hoping to bounce back from his 10-hit, four-earned-runs performance last Friday against Detroit. Livan Hernandez, 2-0, is slated to pitch for the Twins. However, rain could wipe out the game, which might not be a horrible thing.

UPDATE: Thursday's game has been cancelled due to rain.
