Baseball and Other Distractions

I bet Jerry Reinsdorf, Ken Williams, and the rest of the White Sox gang are sure glad to be getting national media coverage again. It's been the busiest press week for the team since Tom Gamboa last visited the South Side (ok, all scandal-mongering aside, there was that little World Series championship a few years back).

Ozzie has clearly been boning up on some postmodern media criticism. Last week's profanity-laden tirade (his first in several years) was his most "meta" yet! Not only did Ozzie call out the usual suspects--angry fans, fickle media, etc. He also talked about profanity-laden tirades mid-profanity-laden tirade, musing on Lee Elia's place in Chicago sports lore and threatening to capitalize on his penchant for ill-chosen words. Either Ozzie is a media-savvy opportunist, or he's just really, really crazy.

Then there's this whole blow-up doll thing, already adequately covered here in the pages of Tailgate. Seriously, in this age of round-the-clock, wall-to-wall media overexposure, it's reassuring to know that journalists can still dig up the really important stories. One interesting subplot to this amusing nontroversy: baseball has the most liberal media access of any major American sport. If journalists are going to jump down the players'/organization's throats every time they do something silly like this, isn't MLB going to crack down on their access to the players?

Safe to say, it's been a week of major distractions for the White Sox. But, hey, they're playing baseball on the South Side too! And, hey, they actually snapped that six-game losing streak at last! I guess my theory about playing in dome stadiums was pretty stupid after all. Maybe all that media attention has taken the players' minds off of how badly they've been pressing. Whatever the explanation, the offense finally woke up, stringing together clutch hits and taking advantage of some poor Twins defense. Meanwhile, this guy Gavin Floyd appears to be the real deal. He flirted with a no-hitter for the second time in a month, lowering his ERA to 2.50 and raising his record to 3-1.

Today, Livan Hernandez faces Mark Buehrle at the Cell. Let's get something going boys, and make 'em forget all about the latest scandals.
