Decisions, Decisions: Bulls Weighing Options

Continuing the Bulls-apalooza here at Tailgate…

So with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft firmly nestled in their back pockets, are the Bulls now a little more attractive to potential head coaches than they were a couple of days ago?

That’s the question being asked around the league, including by the Sun-Times’ John Jackson, who speculates that having that top pick might pique the interest of the upper tier of available coaches, including former New York Knick coach Jeff Van Gundy, last seen analyzing games for ABC-TV, and former Dallas Mavericks’ head coach Avery Johnson.

Whether having a shot at either Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley makes the Bulls the most beautiful girl at the prom now is a difficult question to answer. Any head coach worth talking to about the position would be one who looks at the big picture rather than the acquisition of one untested rookie, and a freshman out of college at that. And the Bulls’ big picture, even with either Rose or Beasley, would still be a little incomplete.

So far, none of the big names have sent General Manager John Paxson any surprise message on his Blackberry, so he’s sticking to his plan of interviewing assistant coaches for the vacancy. The latest NBA rumor mill says the selection process has been narrowed down to two “real” candidates: former DePaul star Ty Corbin, currently with the Utah Jazz, and Los Angeles Lakers assistant Brian Shaw. But Corbin’s fellow Jazz assistant coach, Jeff Hornacek, has also been mentioned.

And if you consider the fact that some writers think the best thing the Bulls could do is to trade the No. 1 pick away, the entire picture goes out of whack like a satellite dish in a snowstorm.

Rose. Beasley. Corbin. Shaw. Hornacek. Trade. The Bulls have a lot of options facing them in the coming weeks. Maybe too many.
