ESPN <3 Sox
It's always kind of annoying when ESPN treats its opinions as news. They do it a lot. But still, it's cool when Chicago gets a shout-out on the front page of the MLB section of ESPN.com, even if they're only teasing to this week's MLB Power Rankings. The network's baseball gurus seem to think that Chicago baseball is the real deal this summer: the Cubs have risen all the way to the No. 1 position, with the Sox lurking not far behind at No. 4. Aaargh, ESPN, why must I indulge your shameless list-making?
Meanwhile, the Sox get more Bristol, Conn. love with an appearance on the flagship Sunday Night Baseball (although these guys seem to think that the dynamic duo of John Miller and Joe Morgan is a less than dubious distinction). The South Siders will try to salvage the final game of a series against the Angels, a series that has found the club returning to its offensively-challenged ways. Jose Contreras faces John Lackey in a rematch of the memorable duel they staged last week.
Contreras is hot, but Lackey has been throwing extremely well since returning from a tricep injury. This is a matchup between two good clubs, and a possible ALDS preview. The last time the Sox and the Angels met in the playoffs, things went pretty well. But the Angels have taken four out of six this season, and their excellent pitching will continue to stymie many bats in the lineup.
Under the hot lights of national TV coverage, which side of these schizophrenic Sox will show up tonight?
