Sky's The Limit with Fowles
No. 1 vs. No. 2 is always a big draw, particularly in sports. Think Ali vs. Frazier in boxing. Navratilova vs. Evert in tennis. Bird vs. Magic in the NBA. Kobayashi vs. Joey Chestnut in hot dog eating.
Soon, we may be able to add Parker vs. Fowles.
That’s Candace Parker, the No. 1 over all pick in this year’s WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks vs. Sylvia Fowles, the No. 2 pick in the draft by the Chicago Sky. The two superstars-in-training will meet for the first time as pros tonight, 7 p.m. at the Sears Centre, 5333 Prairie Stone Parkway in Hoffman Estates in the last preseason game for both teams before the WNBA regular season begins.
Parker, a 6-4 forward out of Tennessee who also attended Naperville Central High School, is being touted with the weighty title of “the best player of her generation” by the league and she very well may be after her storied collegiate career. Fowles, a 6-6 center from LSU, was the National Defensive Player of the Year and had already made an impact with the Sky, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in their May 11 preseason game against Indiana, an 81-71 victory.
Fowles’ presence is a big plus for the Sky, who rebounded from a dismal inaugural season in 2006 (when they went 5-29) to go 14-20 last season and just barely miss the playoffs. Look for them to improve even further under new head coach and GM Steven Key.
The Sky open the regular season May 17 against the Seattle Storm at their regular home in the UIC Pavillion.
