Super Week
About two weeks from now, the Point Premium Root Beer – Super Week – International Cycling Classic, or just Super Week to those in the know, is due to start with a bang, down here in Chicago. July 11th, the neighborhood of Beverly Hills, down in the South Side, will find its streets aswarm with cyclists, neck to neck at speed, fighting for the finish in the Beverly Hills Cycling Classic presented by Vee Pak/Beverly Bike & Ski. July 12th is the St. Francis Hospital Blue Island ProAm.
Super Week draws cyclists, both professional and amateur, from all over the nation to this corner of the Midwest for over two weeks of nearly-daily races. Mostly criteriums, these races are fast-paced and filled full of aggressive riders. Intimidating stuff for sure, but crits nearly always make for great watching.
Past years have found international cycling stars taking the podium: Robbie Ventura, formerly of the US Postal squad won Beverly Hills in 2004; tattooed Rock Racing racer Kayle Leo Grande in 2007 and Alex Candelario of Jelly Belly in 2006 took the top step in The Great Downer Avenue Bike Race, held in the streets of our neighbors to the north, Milwaukee.
Of course, spots are still open if you want to join in the fun.
And lest I forget, the Tour de Fat was apparently a good time. I wish I was there to imbibe and participate in the parade, but that's life.
