Boulevarding
Elsewhere on GB, Chris Brunn's described the new initiative by the Chicagoland Bike Federation, the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, and others to close 10 miles of Chicago streets on the Northwest and West sides to car traffic October 5th and 26th so that local residents can bike, run or walk without worry of cars.
This is exciting stuff, to be sure. The route includes Kedzie and Logan boulevards on October 5th, and California from 24th to Lake on the 26th. Modeled after similar programs in Guadalajara, Mexico and Bogota, Columbia, this is a program long in the making - news on Chicago's efforts go back to at least 2005.
Make no mistake, those streets on those days aren't likely the place to tear around at 28 MPH in the red mist of an interval effort. Save that stuff for more appropriate places. Rather, saddle up on the cruiser, bring your non-cycling friends, and revel in a slow cruise down some of the more beautiful of Chicago's streets. Sometimes life's best served at a different pace than what one is accustomed.

This is exciting- and the perfect time of year for a leisurely cruise!
