You're Not in Kansas (City) Anymore
At one point during last night's roller derby bout, featuring the Windy City Rollers All-Stars vs. the Kansas City Warriors All-Stars travel teams, a friend leaned over to me and pointed at the score. It was only seven minutes in, and already WCR were ahead 25-9. "Uh, I thought Kansas City was supposed to be good," she said.
Well, uh, yes, as the 2007 national flat-track champions, they certainly were supposed to be. But the lead WCR stole right from the beginning only proved to be the theme of the evening, ending the bout at 155-39.
WCR, whose standings are #7 in the nation and #4 regionally, have had an excellent travel team season. Their last bout, in Denver against the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls, ended with a WCR victory 97-28.
The All-Stars have one more game, against the Carolina Rollergirls on Oct. 25. But before then, they have to show their stuff at the Eastern Regional Tournament in Madison, WI on Oct. 10-12.
