Have Yourself An Air-ry Little Christmas...

airjordan-xx3.jpgFor fans of the iconic Air Jordan shoes, Christmas will come a couple of days early this year.

On December 23, 23 stores across the country will sell the 23rd edition of the Air Jordan shoe by Nike, for $230. In the world of the sneakerhead, this is big news, big enough that fans have camped out in front of the designated stores across the country, including our own Niketown on Michigan Ave. since the begnning of this week. Did I mention that the shoes don't go on sale until Dec. 23?

Did I also mention that each store will sell only 23 pairs of the shoes?

The shoe worn by former Bulls superstar Michael Jordan (yeah, yeah, he wore number 23) has developed what can only modestly be called a cult following. But is it merely a cult when some of its members spend thousands of dollars on the shoe, not in the course of a lifetime or a year, but a month? When it has spawned its own movie backed by a famous Hollywood movie star? When, as we might ruefully recall, it can lead to death?

There are those who see the shoe as more than just something to possess. Many of the folks willing to brave a Chicago winter outdoors for a week talk of reselling the shoe on Ebay for thousands of dollars at some point.

But for many of the rest, it's the Holy Grail to add to their collection, particularly now when the upcoming shoe represents the last in the line (Nike claims). Afterwards, presumably, they'll have to find something else to fill the void. Air LeBron anyone?

Note to all of the people who waited outside of The Apple Store to be the first to own the iPhone: This is what you looked like to the rest of us.
