Buehrle Masterful: Sox Offense Comes Alive
White Sox ace Mark Buehrle was flat out dominate last night at U.S. Cellular Field. He would take a perfect game into the seventh before the Tigers Placido Polanco hit a double to break up his bid for perfection.
Buehrle went eight innings, giving up one hit and striking out five. He may have jinxed himself after returning to the dugout in the middle of sixth by acknowledging that he had a no-no going. After surrendering that lead-off double in the seventh he got into trouble by walking two to load the bases but would retire the side as Tiger catcher Gerald Laird would fly out to center.
He is now 5-0 and it is the first time since 2001 that he has started off the year with five straight victories. He is 14-8 lifetime against the Tigers.
Buehrle was helped out by his offense as they provided him with some run support. Five runs in the bottom of the first off Tigers starter Armando Galarraga. A.J. Pierzynski launched a two-run homer (4) and Jayson Nix hit a solo shot (1) as well. They would add on in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-0. Bobby Jenks would come on in the ninth to close it out in a non-save situation.
The Sox will welcome the Texas Rangers for a three game set over the weekend. Jose Contreras (0-4) will go for the Sox against the Rangers Matt Harrison (2-2). Contreras will look to rebound after a poor start in Texas last weekend. He only went three and third and surrendered seven earned. Another poor start by Contreras and he might be on his way out.
No make-up date has been set for Wednesday nights rain out game.
