Sox issue Royal beatdown: Win 11-2
The White Sox busted out the big lumber in Kansas City Friday night. Jermaine Dye got the Sox rolling in the top of first with a solo home run (13) off Royals starter Brian Bannister. They broke the game open in the sixth with six runs. Their 11-2 victory was fueled by a 17-hit on onslaught.
Sox starter Clayton Richard pitched seven strong innings giving up six hits and striking out seven. He earned his second win since joining the Sox rotation on May 18. His streak of not allowing an earned came to an end after 16 2/3 innings as the Royals Billy Butler would tag him with a solo home run in the sixth. They are going to be with out their All-Star left fielder Carlos Quentin as he has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The move has been made retroactive to May 26.
Quentin has been bothered by a foot injury for most of May and it has cost him a games here and there. He re-aggravated the injury in Anaheim Monday night. He has been suffering from plantar fasciitis. Now he will be given a chance to rest instead of trying to play through the injury. A healthy Quentin is key to any success the Sox hope to have the rest of the season.
In his place the Sox have recalled outfielder Dewayne Wise. Wise has been rehabbing his separated shoulder at Triple-A Charlotte. He suffered the injury making a diving catch back on April 13 in Detroit.
Sox ace Mark Buehrle (6-1) will take on the Royals Gil Meche (2-5) Saturday night. The Sox are 22-25 and are four games out of first. Game time is 6:10 p.m. CT.
The Sox made a trade with the New York Mets acquiring backup catcher Ramon Castro for righty reliever Lance Broadway. Broadway was 0-1 with a 5.06 earned run average. To make room for Castro they designated backup catcher Corky Miller for assignment. Miller in 14 games batted .205 with five RBI and no home runs.
