Sox have no answer for A's
After taking the first game in a four game series against the Oakland A's the White Sox have now dropped their second in a row to the A's 5-3. The offense got off on the right foot after Jermaine Dye launched a two run homer in the first inning. However that was the last time the Sox would have a lead in this game.
Starter Clayton Richard would give it right back in the top of the second inning. After three solid starts Richard had one of his poorer performances since joining the rotation. He gave up seven hits, four walks and five earned runs in five and one third innings. Three home runs by the A's were the undoing of Richard.
This is the second night in a row that the Sox have lost to a pitcher they've never faced before. Last night was the seventh time that they had been shutout this season. This is a team that lives and dies by the long ball and being shutout really exposes a weakness of this club. The inability to score runs other than hitting home runs is going to hurt this club in the long run. Perhaps the arrival of rookie phenomenon Gordon Beckham from Triple-A Charlotte will help the struggling Sox offense.
After tonights loss management has decided to call up rookie infielder Gordon Beckham with the hopes of giving the offense a much needed boost. To make way for Beckham someone had get their walking papers. That someone was Wilson Betemit, who was designated for assignment after the game. In 20 games he went .258/.324/.432. While his hitting wasn't stellar it was more than likely his five errors in 14 games at first and third base that probably cost him his spot with the club.
Mark Buehrle (6-1) will look to stop this two game skid tomorrow against the A's Brett Anderson (2-5). With tonight's loss the Sox drop to 25-27 and are three and a half games out of first place. Game time is 1:05 p.m. CT.
