Sox Sleepless In Seattle: Lose 1-0 In 14 Innings

Last night's extra inning affair saw the White Sox offense waste a quality outing by Mark Buehrle, who went eight innings and limited the Mariners hitters to just six hits. However, give credit to M's starter Felix Hernandez, who matched Buehrle tit-for-tat last night.

Hernandez struck out 10 Sox batters over seven innings. Alex Rios went 1-for-6 last night in his Sox debut last night. He struck out twice as well. Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye both sat this one out. Both are healthy and were just receiving a day off. They could've used their bats in the line-up however. It was a familiar face that came back to bite the Sox in the 14th.

Ken Griffey, Jr. who was acquired by the White Sox last July hit a walk-off RBI single to win it. Seattle has not been kind to the Sox in the past nine seasons. Since 2001 the Sox are 12-23 against the M's in Seattle, that is including this most recent three game series.

The Sox will look to regroup in Oakland where it has been a struggle for them over the years, however, this is a different A's team. They are in last place and are with out Mulder, Hudson and Zito who used to give the Sox fits. The Sox need to take two out of three or sweep the A's this weekend. If the Sox are for real they will take care of a lesser A's team.

It starts with Jose Contreras Friday night. He will need to keep his team in the game and have one of his better outings of the season. In his last five starts he is 0-4 with a no decision. Contreras is 4-11 this season with an ERA of 8.59. Perhaps he came back a little too early from that Achilles injury he suffered last season. Contreras will be opposed by Oakland's Brett Anderson (7-8). Game time is 9:05 p.m. CT. The Southsiders are 58-57 and two and a half games back of Detroit.
