Sox Beat Angels 6-2

What a difference a week makes. Just last week the Sox were finishing up an abysmal 1-6 road trip that included them being swept in Minnesota. That would all be forgotten after they returned home to take on the best the American League had to offer. They took three out of four from the first place New York Yankees over the weekend then set their sites on the team with the best record in the A.L., the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Chi Sox snapped the Halos' eight-game winning streak last night with a wild walk-off 5-4 victory. That was in spite of Jose Contreras' erratic pitching performance. Gavin Floyd, however, would fair much better tonight. Floyd went eight innings and only surrendered one run and struck out six.

His offense would make his performance stand up as Jim Thome hit two home runs for the Southsiders. Paul Konerko would also hit a home run. Thome was 2-for-4 on the night with four RBI. The Sox are 5-1 on this home stand and can go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon. John Danks (9-6) will take on the Angels Ervin Santana (3-6).

Even though things looked bad a week ago after a horrendous road trip, but that is the beauty of baseball. You can be down one minute and up the next. The Sox are currently sitting one game behind first place Detroit. After they wrap up this series with the Angels the lowly Cleveland Indians come to town. If they want to take over first from the Tigers, who have been a little shaky as of late, they will need to take two of three or sweep the Indians because anything less is unacceptable.

The Sox will head to the West coast after the weekend to take on Seattle and Oakland. In years past the West coast trips have always been problematic for the Sox. If they are for real they will take full advantage of the fading Mariners and the last place A's. Perhaps the return of Jake Peavy in the next few weeks will give them a shot in the arm. Game time tomorrow is 1:05 p.m. CT.
