Footballic Ramblings: Should the Bears Want Owens??

The Chicago Bears have made over the past two offseasons some remarkable (and huevos-y) personnel moves. In the spring of '09 it was, of course, the Jay Cutler for Kyle Orton and our draft picks trade. Thus far this year, the Bears have cracked the treasure chest and tossed out heaping sacks of Spanish doubloons to standout defensive end Julius Peppers and dynamo running back Chester Taylor, but it's not as if this squad still isn't rife with holes. The Bears offensive line is still a huge question mark, the secondary is still a joke and maybe most pressing to keeping an occasionally moody but very talented quarterback content, the wide receivers are still not even "okay".

The Bears need some better receiving threats for Cutler to pass to, this has been apparent since the day the trade went thru. Devin Hester has proven himself to not be the solution, while Johnny Knox and Devin Aromashodu are burgeoning stars that may very well burn out if burdened with the assignment of "No. 1 receiver."

However, there is a capable and proven receiver out there: Terrell Owens.

Yes, T.O. is as much sideline sideshow as he is legit and still-good-no-longer-great wideout in the NFL. But he'll be coming at a huge discount and the Bears have very little left to lose after being offensive laughingstocks the past few seasons. The Bears have made a lot of efforts to shore up the defense with Peppers and to provide Matt Forte with a proper stable mate in the backfield, now, with the offensive line seemingly (if not unfortunately) set, why not reach out and nab a talented receiver for Cutler? Cutler loves to throw into coverage (his league high 26 interceptions last year made that clear) so why not get a wideout blessed with the physical size to outreach smaller defenders. A receiver who'll happily go up and get the ball instead of letting a corner back nab it for a pick? Owens may like to whine but he also loves to score touchdowns and Jay Cutler could make that happen a lot more often than JP Losman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, or Trent Edwards did last season in Buffalo.

This is all just speculation and devil's advocate (it is called Footballic Ramblings, not Footballic Facts or Footballic Know-it-All) but the Bears have made so many big, risky moves the past few seasons, what's one more?
