Cubs Bullpen Collapses Late In 3-2 Loss
The Cubs needed a quality outing out of Ryan Dempster Wednesday night after Monday's whopping courtesy of the Braves. They got just that, however, the bullpen failed to hold up its end of the deal. Dempster threw six innings of three-hit ball. He surrendered one run and struck out nine.
The Cubs offense was non-existent Wednesday evening as they only managed to scrap out two runs against Braves starter Jair Jurrjens. One of the two runs came as a result of botched inning-ending double play by Braves first baseman Troy Glaus. Their second run came on a Ryan Theriot sac fly.
They left six men stranded on base, but they could've benefited from a few more runs as Cubs reliever John Grabow would serve up a two-run homer to the Braves Chipper Jones in the bottom of the eighth. That would be the end of what should've gone down in the books as a Cubs victory.
Before Cub fans start to freak out about this 0-2 start to the season. Let me remind you that the Cubs started the 2008 season the exact same way and they would go on to win 97 games. Now there is no guarantee that they will win 97 games this year, but it is comforting to know that starting off 0-2 isn't the end of the world.
If this trend continues, then fans can start to press the panic button. There are 160 games left, relax. This team is too good not win. Tomorrow is another game and they will have put this one behind them and go out there and play ball. Cubs starter Randy Wells (0-0) will toe the rubber against the Braves Tommy Hanson (0-0). The first pitch is at 6:10 p.m. CT.
