Sox Snap Four Game Skid, Win 5-4
The White Sox needed to stop the bleeding before it got any worse. Mark Buehrle did just that. He pitched eight strong innings and limited the Twins offense to four runs. It didn't look good for the Sox earlier on as the Twins scored two runs in the first inning, but Buehrle would battle back and limit the damage. He looked to be in mid-season form in just his second start of the season.
While he kept the Twins to just four runs he would need a little help from his offense too. He got just that. The Sox offense tied the game back up in the bottom of the first on the strength of a Paul Konerko two-run homer, his third of the year. Mark Kotsay and Gordon Beckham also hit their first home runs of the season.
They would take the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth on an Andruw Jones RBI single. Bobby Jenks came on in the ninth to shut it the door on the Twins for his first save of the year. Today's victory ended the Twin's six game winning streak at U.S. Cellular Field.
It is too early to talk about must win games, but the Sox really needed this one today. It is a long season and winning will make it more of an enjoyable six months as opposed to not winning. Buehrle was the perfect guy to stop the slide before it got out of hand. If the offense could support the pitching staff the Sox will be in decent shape and they should be there down the stretch as long as they get good pitching, timely hitting, good defense, and can keep people off the disable list. Also a little luck here and there wouldn't hurt either.
The Sox hit the road and take the show North of the border to take on the Toronto Blue Jays for a four game set. Jake Peavy (0-0) will take the ball in the opener and he'll be opposed by Jays starter Brian Tallet (1-0). Game time is 6:20 p.m. CT.
