Sweep Home Chicago, Cubs Destroy Brewers 12-2

After a magnificent performance by Ted Lilly last night against the Brewers the Cubs were in line to sweep them for the second time in a week. Unlike last time the Cubs didn't miss out on their opportunity to do so. They had their hitting shoes on today and boy did they ever lay some lumber to the baseball today. They would score in the first five innings alone.

Tyler Colvin got the Cubs on the board in the first inning with a two-run double. Fukudome, who hits well in Miller Park, hit his second home run of the series in the second. A two-run shot. The Cubs would also get home runs from Derrek Lee, Tyler Colvin and Geovany Soto. Both Colvin and Fukudome were a triple shy of the cycle. The offense would end the day with eighteen hits,a season-high.

With plenty of run support the rest would belong to Cubs starter Randy Wells. He continued the trend of good pitching by Cubs starters. Wells went seven innings and only gave up two runs. Despite getting into trouble early on Wells eventually settled down. He scattered seven hits in his seven innings and for the most part gave the bullpen a much needed rest. Cub relievers James Russell and Justin Berg would close it out.

It is funny how this game works. Before this series the Brewers were on a tear hitting everything in sight against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They out scored the Pirates 36-1 in a series sweep. Go figure it would be the Cubs who would have to face them after playing less than stellar ball against the Mets. Just when you think you've figured out this wonderful game it throws you a curve ball. They shut down the Brew Crew outscoring them to the tune of 25-4.

While it is still early in the year this series was reminiscent of a four game sweep courtesy of the Cubs in 2008. Ironically enough Dave Bush started the final game of that '08 series too. The score today was almost identical as the Cubs won 11-4 that day. The Cubs out hit, pitched and out hustled Milwaukee this weekend and that is why they came out on top.

What started off as a dismal 0-2 road trip quickly turned into a productive one as they come home to Chicago 4-3. If a team expects to have any kind of success during a season they need to play at least .500 on the road. The Cubs did just that, now they come home to take the Washington Nationals. While they are no slouch they are most definitely beatable. Taking two out of three would be ideal anything less is unacceptable.

This series victory should provide a nice wave of momentum to ride on for the next couple of days. A lot of positives came out of this series. The starting pitch was excellent, the bullpen did its job. Particularly Carlos Zambrano, who pitched an inning and a third of last nights game and he only allowed a single run. The offense seems to have woken up for the moment.

Also Aramis Ramirez, while he didn't completely break out of his slump he has been showing signs of turning it around. In his final at-bat he lined a solid single to right center. Sometimes all it takes is one hit to get things going again.

Carlos Silva (2-0, 0.95) will take on the Nationals John Lannan (1-1,5.82). Game time is 7:05 p.m. CT. Game will been shown on CLTV and can be heard on WGN Radio 720 AM.
