Cubs Continue Winning Ways,Win 1-0

Despite not being able to win against teams with losing records the Cubs have found success against winning teams as of late. They continued that trend Thursday afternoon at the Friendly Confines against the Dodgers. The Dodgers who had been hot themselves before coming into this series came back down to earth over the past three days.

It took until the bottom of eighth for the Cubs to get their only run of the game. It came after Mike Fontenot lead off the inning with a triple. Tyler Colvin would later drive Fontenot in after doubling down the right field line. The lack off offense was no problem for Cubs starter Ted Lilly.

Lilly threw seven innings of three hit ball. He walked three and struck out five. Unfortunately for Lilly his efforts went unrewarded as he got a no decision in this one. Sean Marshall would get the W in this one and Carlos Marmol notched his 11th save of the season. Marmol now has 49 strikeouts in just 24 an 2/3rds innings. When the Cubs get the ball to Marmol in the ninth he has been flat out filthy and is showing why he is becoming one of the elite closers.

Since coming back from offseason shoulder surgery Lilly has slowly been returning to his form that Cubs fans have come to known over the last few years. His effort today was his best of the year so far. Given a few more starts he should be able to return his winning ways.

It is amazing how they can play so poorly against lesser teams, but they have been able to hang with the supposed best of the best. The test will continue this weekend against their arch rivals the St. Louis Cardinals. They were picked to win the National League Central, however they have had some problems as of late. They are a vulnerable team and if the Cubs can take advantage of that they should be able to win two out of three from their neighbors to the south.

The Cubs will send Randy Wells ( 3-2, 3.99 ERA ) to the mound against former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter ( 5-1, 3.09 ERA ). This is the first meeting of the year between these two. Game time is 1:20 p.m. CT. The game will be on WGN TV and WGN Radio 720 AM.
