White Sox Lose To Blue Jays 0-2: A Change Is Going To Come One Way Or Another
Last night's White Sox game was what is quickly becoming the ugly status quo for the White Sox: a few moments of greatness eclipsed by lots of horrific playing. Despite giving up two runs, John Danks pitched a great game. The problem was the hitting. None of the Sox were able to get the ball farther than a pop-up. Fielding wasn't bad. Alexei Ramirez had some great saves but at bat he was classic Alexei swinging at everything but not hitting. There was no Paul Konerko to bring in his regular home run and even though Alex Rios is batting .300 now, he couldn't manage to get anything started. For a White Sox fan, it was the worst hitting nightmare come true. I, for one, never wanted to see the 2010 White Sox play without Konerko but I got to last night and will get to again tonight as Konerko's neck is still sore, keeping him on the bench.
The biggest failure of last night was Gordon Beckham who managed two errors and couldn't get earn a run for the White Sox. It was the latest in a long line of sub par performances by people who were supposed to be stars, guys like Carlos Quentin, Juan Pierre, and Mark Kotsay. At this point it's starting to look like if Beckham and other Sox players aren't willing to change on their own, the White Sox will have to do it for them.
There have been rumors that trades are already being negotiated but the exchanges aren't pretty. A big whisper is that Konerko could be involved in a three way trade with the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for, among others, first baseman Adrian Gonzales. Personally I think this is a horrible idea since Konerko has done nothing but carry the South Siders at bat and in the field this year. A better idea would be to try and figure out who the weakest pitcher is and try and get Houston Astros hurler-extraordinaire Roy Oswalt who has been pitching a wicked 2.48 as of late. Why the Astros would trade him I have no idea but their loss could be Chicago's gain. Chicago really needs to not copy Houston if they trade Oswalt and hold onto Konerko. As we saw yesterday, a Konerko-less team, even with Rios, is not a good team right now.
Mark Buehrle is starting tonight in game two of the four game series against Toronto, meaning pitching will, again, be solid. Just like last night. Hopefully that's the only thing that will be the same as yesterday.
