Silva Continues Amazing Run, Cubs Beat Pirates 6-1
When the Cubs acquired Carlos Silva from the Seattle Mariners many hoped he would do just enough to anchor the back end of the rotation. To say Silva has met those expectations is the biggest understatement of the season. Silva came into Monday's make-up game with the Pirates with a chance to go 8-0. A feat not seen since Cubs rookie Kenny Holtzman started 8-0 in 1967.
If ever the Cubs needed a win against Pittsburgh Silva was the man to do it. He pitched seven strong innings limiting the Buc's to one run over four hits. The offense, which has been sluggish this entire season got the job done.
Contributions from Geovany Soto and Jeff Baker helped fuel the Cubs 6-1 victory. Ryan Theriot also set a career high in runs scored with four. If Theriot can pick it up offensively it could help the rest of the line up.
The Cubs avoided going winless after dropping the first five previous games in Pittsburgh. Had they lost today it would've been the first time in the series 123-year history that they didnt win at least one game in the Steel City.
The Cubs wrap up their road trip with a three-game series against Milwaukee. Ted Lilly (1-5, 3.61 ERA) will take on the Brewers Yovani Gallardo (6-2, 2.64 ERA) Game time is 7:10 p.m. CT. The game will be shown on Comcast Sports Net Plus as well as heard on WGN Radio 720 AM.
