Cubs 6-Game Winning Streak Snapped; Lose 1-0

A solo homer off the bat of the Giants catcher Buster Posey was all the Giants needed to down the Cubs Tuesday night. Despite being mathematically eliminated a little over a week ago the Cubs have been playing good ball. They wrapped up an 8-1 road trip, which included sweeps of the Cardinals and Marlins.

Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano threw six innings of shut out baseball, but had zero offensive support to back him up. His command was solid as he struck out eight and only walked five. However, a high pitch count would cut short his night. Zambrano would not suffer the loss in this one.

Andrew Casher, who came on in relief of Zambrano served up the long ball to Posey in the eighth. The offense took the night off as evident by the final score. Their chances were few and far between against the Giants Matt Cain.

The Cubs squandered their best chance of the night in the sixth with runners on first and second and only one out. Marlon Byrd would ground into an inning ending double play to eliminate any chance of scoring. They only managed two hits off Giants pitching all night and there is a reason for that. The Giants lead the majors in team pitching. They feature a 3.45 ERA and opponents are batting just .238 against their staff.

Despite tonights loss the Cubs are 17-8 under their interim skipper. They have been playing better baseball since Mike Quade took over, which begs the question where has this been all year? They'll continue their final home series of the year against the Giants tomorrow night.

Randy Wells (7-11, 4.46 ERA) is coming off his best outing of the season against the Cardinals last week will take on the Giants Johnathan Sanchez (11-8, 3.21 ERA). Game time is 7:05 p.m. The game can be seen on WCIU and heard on WGN Radio 720 AM.

UPDATE: Tyler Colvin, who was injured during Sunday's game against the Marlins after a broken bat struck him in the chest is in good condition. His season will ultimately come to an end after this freak accident. Colvin has remained hospitalized since Sunday. This should act as a wake-up call to Major League Baseball. God forbid something like this happens again to a player or worse yet a fan.
