Big Buck Hunters Take Aim On Windy City
Chicago is the epicenter of video game hunting this weekend. Yes, the insanely popular and addictive like it should be illegal, Big Buck Hunter, is having its world championships this weekend at the Wrigleyville haunt, The Cubby Bear. For the uninitiated (and really if you're living in the Midwest, seriously?) the game comes equipped with a blaze orange toy-sized rifle with circuits and wires (some might say "wizardry") that allows the player to hunt big game quarry throughout North America and the world. By blasting away at pixelated pronghorns, bison and mule deer points are accrued, bonus rounds are had and --here's where it gets interesting-- monies are won! Yes, these world championships are just as much about that cold, hard cash as the bragging rights associated with bettering your competition whilst sipping a brew and gamely talking up your game while shooting at game.
Competing for some of that money and prestige will be none other than three sons of Chicago. Trevor Floren is arguably the most talented of the trio, the Lake Villa resident is the number one qualifier in the North Region and was the runner up at last year's BBHWC. In addition to the marksman Floren, two regulars of Lincoln Park's The Other Side, Chris Savell and Richard Campbell who have also qualified for the tourney and all three are aiming to take home that $10,000 grand prize (cha-ching.) To capture that cash the three are going to have to not only get past one another but also the dangerous Brothers Berg (Jerad and Nick) who have claimed the past two championships.
The event kicks off at 5pm tonight with drink specials, Big Buck Hunter Girls (cheerleaders, we hope and not targets) and live band karaoke following the first day of game gunning. Cubby Bear is at 1059 W. Addison.
And, hey, here's some video of Duck Hunt:
