Short Hops: A Very Bobby Hull Christmas
If you were on the fence about seeing "A Christmas Carol" this year at the Goodman Theatre, delay no longer! Tuesday's 7:30 show will feature a one-night cameo by Blackhawks legend Bobby Hull, probably just milling around the background in period costume and joining in the big "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" finale.
A small role, but a nice gesture in partnership with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. He'll meet-and-greet in the lobby after the show -- and of course, sell a few copies of his new book.
Christmas tidings aside, check out the above (1970s?) clip of Hull and Bobby Orr ... chatting poolside in Jamaica ... in swim trunks.
Cubs say goodbye to Santo
Ernie Banks and Ferguson Jenkins were among the pallbearers -- and Bud Selig, boringly, among the eulogizers -- at Ron Santo's funeral Mass on Friday at Holy Name Cathedral. Jesse Jackson also managed to get a seat (and get featured in the Sun-Times photo gallery).
Soldier Field execs muster weak defense of crappy sod
Two days after Jay Cutler (accurately) called the sod at Soldier Field "one of the worst fields in the league," stadium management swung into P.R. mode, taking reporters on a tour of the latest sod installation.
Soldier Field's general manager said Cutler's criticism was "wrong," but otherwise stuck to platitudes about the "strong commitment" the city, the team and the stadium have made to giving good turf. So in other words, it's impossible to dispute the fact that the grass is a mess.
Of course, that actually might be an advantage for the Bears this week against the high-scoring Patriots offense.
