Windy City Rollers All-Stars Take on Pittsburgh
A month after closing their 2011 home season, the Windy City Rollers are back at it -- but this time, they're taking on derby leagues nationwide. So far WCR's travel team, the All-Stars, have enjoyed a slammin' season, winning all four previous games against the likes of Charm City, Montreal, Boston, and Houston. Currently the All-Stars are ranked number 1 in the North Central division and number 10 in the nation.
On Saturday, July 30, the All-Stars are bringing the action back with their first home interleague bout of the season, this time against Pittsburgh's Steel City Derby Demons, who currently rank 6th in the Eastern division and 17th nationally. The All-Stars' B team, the Second Wind, will be bouting against Gotham Girls Roller Derby's Wall St. Traitors.
Lastly, and basically because I like his moniker, Bobby Narco, aka "The Pavarotti of Derby," will be singing the national anthem. Narco's a loaner from the Ithaca League of Women Rollers, and he has performed "The Star Spangled Banner" and occasionally "O! Canada" in nine different states for various roller derby bouts and tournaments.
You heard it here, folks. Derby's getting downright fancy.
The bout takes place at the UIC Pavilion (525 S. Racine Ave). Doors open at 5 p.m., and the first game starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $22 at the door.
