Let's All Get Crazy Optimistic About the Cubs
The bizarro Cubs continued their winning streak in Pittsburgh Thursday night with a 7-6 victory. At the end of this series it has me asking the question, "who are these guys and what have they done with the Cubs?" If you were living under a rock for the first four months and only saw these four games you would've gotten the impression that the Cubs were an above average club.
When in reality they are 18 games under .500 and 15 games out of first place. This four game series in a nutshell is how the Cubs should've played all year long. The "what if" question has been done to death, but when the Cubs play as well as they did in this four game series it makes you wonder. Granted it is the Pirates, but they're no slouch. At least they haven't been this season.
These wins are ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but it is nice to see wins for a change. It sure as hell beats watching them get their butts handed to them. As tough as it is for fans it is even tougher for the Cubs owner Tom Ricketts. He spoke with the Chicago Tribune from Peoria Thursday night and he said, "We're doing everything we can to make it the best organization in baseball."
For most fans it is tough to swallow the idea of waiting three or four years more for a championship, but in all actuality that is probably the best route. Fixing this franchise isn't going to be an overnight snap of the fingers. There is a building process to this whole thing and if done correctly it will produce one, if not several world championships for the Northsiders.
It basically boils down to developing talent in the minors and making a few deals with veterans to assemble a championship ballclub. Sooner or later this franchise is going to break through in a big way. I truly believe that the Ricketts family have the best intentions and are doing everything they possibly can to improve this organization from field level to the front office.
As I've been saying changes are needed and the Ricketts family will be addressing those as time goes on. It is only a matter of time before winning baseball is what takes place at the corner of Clark and Addison.
