Roller Derby Fri Sep 09 2011

Double the Derby

Whoa, man, if you like roller derby, this Saturday is your night. Both hometown leagues, the Windy City Rollers and the Chicago Outfit are bouting on the same evening--and, unfortunately, at the same time. That's right, derby fans, you must make a Sophie's Choice decision between the two games.

At the UIC Pavilion (525 S. Racine), the WCR All-Stars will take on the Kansas City Roller Warriors. At 6 p.m., the evening opens with the two leagues' B teams, WCR Second Wind and KCRW Plan B, battling it out on the track. At 7:30, WCR All-Stars bout against KCRW All-Stars.

You heard me: The number-one team in the North Central division, will play against the number-one team in the South Central division. Sure, WCR mopped the floor with San Diego 256-22 at the August 27 bout, but Kansas City is good -- though I don't know whether they can ever top Raquel Welch's sweet moves in Kansas City Bombers.

Tickets start at $20 presale. Get yours online or at the door.

Meanwhile, at the Windy City Fieldhouse (2367 W. Logan Blvd.), the Chicago Outfit is pulling a double header. The Syndicate, the league's A team (which currently ranks ninth in the North Central division) will bout the Brewcity Bruisers (which ranks ranks seventh in the same division) of Milwaukee. The Shade Brigade, the Outfit's B team will prove their own against the Twin City Rollergirls from Champaign-Urbana. It should be a fun, tight game between the teams all around.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the first bout begins at 7. Suicide seating (that is, trackside) is available first come, first served. Tickets are $15 presale or $20 at the door. Oh, and as always, the parking is blessedly free.
