Derby Lite Comes to Chicago
Are you a gal and want to kick even more ass? I have just the thing: Derby Lite is coming to Chicago!
Sporting a motto of "For women who should know better," Derby Lite is low-impact women's flat-track roller derby. Think of it as a different approach to a typical exercise routine: each practice typically focuses on strength and cardio exercises, skating skills, drills, and scrimmaging. Unlike regular roller derby, there's no hard hitting, and it involves a fraction of the time commitment.
Previously the practices were held only in the suburbs: Oak Park/Forest Park, Prospect Heights, Norridge, and Wheaton/Carol Stream. Starting February 18, beginner classes will be held Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. at Scottsdale Park (4620 W. 83rd) and Saturdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Willye B. White Park (1610 W. Howard), and on Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Pulaski Park (1419 W. Blackhawk). Another class will be held at Pulaski Park (1419 W. Blackhawk) on Tuesdays 10 to 11:30 a.m., where there will also be childcare available. Currently there are no upper-level classes available at the Chicago locations.
Registration will begin January 18.
If you're not sure if derby's your thing, try going to their free "Get In Gear" event at Willye B. White Park on Saturday, January 21st, from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a helmet (a bike or skateboard helmet will do) and watch as Derby Lite members explain and demonstrate what they do. Those participating can also borrow skates and protective pads to give it a whirl.
