White Sox Lower Ticket Prices For Next Season

Sox_200.pngFeeling depressed, White Sox fans? Still not over the ending to the season? Sad that the Tigers -- the Tigers! -- clinched the pennant Thursday night?

Well, chin up!

The White Sox will be lowering some ticket and parking prices at Sox Park for 2013. Seats in the lower deck in the corners will be $20, and seats in the corners of the upper deck will be $7 every game (save for three prime contests). Many season ticket packages (especially bleacher seats) will be cheaper, and parking will be dropped to $20 from prices of $25 and $23.

While fans would love to view this as an act of philanthropy by owner Jerry Reinsdorf, this is actually an effort to boost some pretty weak attendance figures. The Sox finished 24th in attendance in 2012, drawing in less than 2,000,000 fans, the franchise's lowest showing since 2004. Well, maybe if the team was successful, fans wou– hey wait, the team was in first place for about four months.

It came down to ticket prices. The cheapest Sox ticket last year went for $16, and good seats would be closer to $40. And, though the Sox had half-price tickets on Monday, the team only had seven such home games in 2012, and only two were during the summer.

According to this year's ESPN.com franchise rankings, the Sox finished 20th in MLB in affordability. The stadium isn't making up for it -- the South Siders came in 27th among baseball teams in stadium experience. And, as speculated, reducing prices can mean the team will reduce payroll.

No matter. Fans can take solace in the fact that they can take in just about any Sox game in 2013 for less than a sawbuck. You can keep that in mind while rooting against Detroit in the World Series next week.
