A Game With No Rules

While the nation scratches its head over the Manti Te'o saga, and debates whether or not to watch Lance Armstrong confess to Oprah Winfrey what we already know, a family on Chicago's southwest side struggles for an answer as they prepare to bury their 17-year-old son.

Morgan Park student Tyrone Lawson II was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm (CST) this past Wednesday, after being shot during an altercation that occurred after a basketball game. Fighting ain't what it used to be.

The brawl took place after Simeon, which is ranked in the top-10 nationally in most polls, and alma mater to Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose, beat Morgan Park, 53-51, at Chicago State University. According to police reports, the fight began after the game and carried out to the parking lot, which is where the shooting took place. No word yet from officials as to whether or not the shooting was in relation to the fight.

Regardless of your stance on the battle in Washington and around the country facing gun control, we can all agree that this was another senseless act where false bravado hid behind a pistol.

Our president will posture for tougher gun laws; he will either be supported or vilified by his peers in Washington and constituents from Dallas, TX to Newtown, CT. New laws will be proposed; gun-rights activists will speak their minds on talk shows in support of the Second Amendment. We'll eventually move on from Te'o and Armstrong and be taken in by another sports scandal, and, sadly, all the while, more innocent victims will be gunned down. That's the way this works.

The Lawson family will bury their son and grieve for a long time, I imagine. I know when my cousin was accidentally shot nearly 30 years ago, it crippled our family for months - some even years. And sadly someone else will surely be shot and killed from the hands of a deranged individual, whether it be after a sporting event or on a random Saturday morning. That's what happens when there are no rules, either in the streets or coming from Washington.

To make it even more sad, it was probably over something trivial like $100 tennis shoes SMH

Maybe they're right and guns don't kill people, what kills people is the rights of guns without the responsibility of accountability because there are no rules.
