The Anatomy of Payback

Thumbnail image for GB blackhawks icon.pngHard hits have been a part of hockey as long as anyone can remember. Especially on teams that are regarded as being soft.

Hawks fans may not want to hear this but I'm going to go ahead and say it. They know the scouting report says: Be physical. Every team in the NHL knows that the Hawks are an offensive team. The derogatory term for that is "finesse."

After Raffi Torres laid out Marion Hossa in last season's playoffs, Hawks fans wanted blood when the team played the Phoenix Coyotes last week.

Like most Hawks fans, the smart ones at least, I wanted the team to get back at Torres the right way -- not do what Daniel Carcillo did last year against Vancouver. Remember how he would go after players on the Canucks? He ended up getting out of position defensively, which directly led to two goals.

I was glad the team got the Torres stuff out of the way early in the first period. Jamal Mayers challenged Torres. They fought. Done and Done.

As for the rest of the game, it couldn't have turned out any better.
