Fury Take 2013 Ivy King Cup
The Fury capped off an undefeated 2013 season Saturday by winning the Ivy King Cup.
The Fury beat 2012 IKC champs the Manic Attackers 211-186 to take home the Cup, awarded annually to the best of the Windy City Rollers' four home teams.
The Manic Attackers jumped out to a big lead early. Jammers Zoe Trocious, Ying O'Fire and Thievin' Tyler put the Manics up 49-0 early while their blockers held The Fury scoreless for the first seven jams of the bout.
After Fury jammer Ska Face scored the team's first three points in the eighth jam, The Fury suddenly got hot and started chipping away at the Manics' lead. Moby Nipps, later named player of the game, gave The Fury their first lead in the 14th jam. The Fury led 87-63 with 9:56 left in the first half.
At the half, The Fury led 124-96.
The Manic Attackers came out of the locker room hot. Ska Face went to the penalty box close to the start of the first jam of the second half, giving the Manics a power jam. Ying O'Fire took full advantage, scoring 22 points to bring The Fury's lead down to 9, 127-118.
The Manic Attackers kept chipping away and it was Ying O'Fire who recaptured the lead in jam 6. She scored two points to put the Manics up 132-131.
The Manics went up as many as 12 points, but strong jamming by The Fury gave them a 186-176 lead with six minutes to play. But the Manic Attackers were not about to go quietly, tying the game at 186-186 with 1:50 left.
The final jam of the night saw Ska Face on the line for The Fury facing off against Ying O'Fire. Not long after the jam started, Ying O'Fire was sent to the penalty box, giving The Fury a power jam. Ska Face scored 25 points to give The Fury a 211-186 win and the 2013 Ivy King Cup.
Moby Nipps said after the bout that despite being down by nearly 50 points early, her team never felt like they were out of it.
"The Fury, we play level," she said. "We come out hard and we maintain."
She said she knew it would be tough to keep the Manic Attackers from repeating as IKC champs.
"I knew it would be a hard fight," she said. "This game is amazing."
