WCR All-Stars Beat Detroit in Final Regular Season Bout

Athena DeCrime swears she's not a crier. Perhaps not, but that didn't stop the tears from flowing Saturday night.

Athena DeCrime, one of the original members of the Windy City Rollers, played the last home bout of a 9-year career with the league Saturday night and helped lead WCR's A-team, the All-Stars, to a 240-127 victory over the Detroit Derby Girls. The victory, she said, was made even more special by the fact that not only was Saturday the last bout of the regular season, but it was also WCR Alumni Night and many former WCR skaters were in the crowd.

"It's so special to have them here on my last home bout," Athena DeCrime said.

Athena DeCrime and the rest of the All-Stars still have at least one more bout ahead of them when they travel to Milwaukee next month for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Championships. But she called Saturday's bout the "emotional end" of her derby career.

The All-Stars jumped out to a very quick lead, holding Detroit to only two points through the first five jams. With 5:50 remaining in the first half, the All-Stars led 102-29. Detroit picked up a little steam in the last few minutes of the half, holding the All-Stars to only 8 points, while racking up 31.

The All-Stars took a 110-60 lead into the locker room.

Penalties were a problem for Detroit in the second half. Though the visitors took lead jammer several times and managed to score some points, their jammers also tended to wind up in the penalty box, allowing the All-Stars to extend their lead.

All told, the All-Stars scored 130 second half points, giving them a 240-127 win.

Detroit jammer Racer McChaseHer said after the bout that the All-Stars were a tough team, but that the score may have been different were penalties not such a factor. She said that because of jammer penalties, the last five minutes of the bout were basically an extended power jam for the All-Stars.

Athena DeCrime said after the bout that in her 9 years with the Rollers, she's accomplished everything she set out to do and is looking forward to having a summer break - something she said she hasn't had since joining the league.

"Some patio sitting is ahead of me," she said with a laugh. "It's time to move on."

In the undercard bout Saturday, WCR's B-team, the Second Wind, beat the Killamazoo Derby Darlins of Kalamazoo, Mich 246-129.
