Double Crossers Win WCR Home Season Championship
The Double Crossers, who were winless in the 2012 and 2013 Windy City Rollers home seasons, capped off a huge turnaround by beating the Manic Attackers Saturday to win the 2014 Ivy King Cup.
Though the Double Crossers had the lead after the first jam, the Manics took the lead in jam 2 when Jan Trainor, pushed through the pack to score a quick 3 points. Manics blockers held the Jamburglar, jamming for the Double Crossers, scoreless.
The Manic Attackers kept the lead for the rest of the first half, but the Double Crossers kept it close. With her team down 70-41, Ms. Dr. Joseph L. Simonis took lead jammer for the Double Crossers and powered through the Manics' blockers for three fast scoring passes. When the dust settled, the Manics' lead was down to 14, 70-56.
The Manic Attackers took a 146-128 lead into the locker room and started the second half off strong. After the third jam, the Manics' lead was 26, 158-132.
But in jam 4, the Manic Attackers' jammer Thievin' Tyler went to the penalty box. The Jamburglar managed to score 15 points for the Double Crossers and Thievin' Tyler was able to score two points after being released from the penalty box. At the end of the jam, the score was 160-147 Manic Attackers.
The Double Crossers took the lead in jam 5. Ms. Dr. Joseph L. Simonis took advantage of several of the Manics' blockers being in the penalty box and scored 14 points. The jam ended with the Double Crossers on top 164-161.
The Manics got the lead back in jam 12. Jan Trainor, jamming for the Manic Attackers, went to the penalty box for a track cut, but Double Crossers jammer Claire Lee Dangerous followed her in almost immediately after, allowing Jan Trainor to be released. The Manic Attackers were up 187-176 with 15:20 left to play.
But the very next jam, the Double Crossers, on the heels of three quick scoring passes by the Jamburglar, took the lead back for good. With 13:40 left to play, the Double Crossers were up 203-197.
When the final whistle blew, the Double Crossers were up 269-252 to take home the 2014 Ivy King Cup.
In the undercard bout, the Hell's Belles beat last year's Ivy King Cup champions The Fury to take third place.
